San Francisco Symphony: Dvorak's New World Symphony is back with Joshua Weilerstein as conductor, Alexi Kenney in violin, and of course, the San Francisco Symphony orchestra. The concert kicks off with Study for String by Pavel Haas then the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius. The event finishes with the highlight of the concert: Symphony No. 9: From the New World by Antonin Dvorak.

The San Francisco Symphony is one of the top orchestras in the nation, known for its daring and creative programming that emphasizes works by American composers and aims to introduce symphonic music to new listeners. The group initially achieved international acclaim for its concerts and recordings while being led by longtime music director Michael Tilson Thomas. Also, the orchestra was included on an SFS Media album of symphonic music by Alban Berg in 2021, conducted by Tilson Thomas.

“That's most apparent in the wonderful slow movement, which starts out shrouded in funereal darkness but emerges by the end into a radiant major key. The scherzo, too, darts around harmonically in ways that make this a natural companion piece for the Dvorák,” The San Francisco Chronicle shares when discussing the orchestra’s performance of Dvorak.

Accompanying the performance is Violinist Alexi Kenney, who was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2016 and a 2020 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. He is known for commissioning new pieces, developing experimental programming, soloing with important orchestras both domestically and internationally, and working with some of the most renowned musicians of our time. In addition to concerts at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall's "Distinctive Debuts" series, the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Phillips Collection, Mecklenberg-Vorpommern Festival, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, he has also performed at these venues.

With the recent reopening of Frost Amphitheater back in 2019, Stanford University's illustrious tradition of outdoor classical music is revived. The contrast between the bare stage and the lush greenery of the surroundings, along with the rough texture of the earth and stone design, echoes the entranceways of mid-20th century homes in Southern California. The ambiance makes it the perfect setting for the event.
